AI Generated Art

In addition to my passion for photography, I've been exploring the realm of AI-generated art. I've been utilizing text-to-image AI models, like DALL-E and Midjourney, to create unique pieces that are unlike anything I could capture with a camera. Midjourney, in particular, has allowed me to accurately realize my artistic prompts in intriguing ways. I enjoy taking pictures as well as making AI images, but for their own distinct reasons.

I recently introduced a fun competitive element to my artistic journey with AI on my website, ai.nicolekofman.com. My partner and I challenged each other to a contest - we bet on whether it was necessary to use text-to-text descriptions to generate a satisfactory image from the AI. I was of the opinion that it wasn't necessary. The competition was fiercely contested, and while I emerged victorious without the use of ChatGPT, I found that the most striking results indeed came from the instances where I personally employed text-to-text descriptions before using the text-to-image AI.

Working with AI to create art pieces has become a fun, almost whimsical, activity for me. I enjoy the challenge of directing the AI, using precise language to bring my creative vision to life in the images it generates. It requires a unique kind of creativity and it's rewarding to see the results of this process. I appreciate the sense of calm it gives me, similar to the soothing effect of coloring, though it is distinct from the gratification I derive from photography.

This exciting journey has now led me to an AI course at UCI, where I'm further broadening my understanding of AI's potential. I also had a small class competition with 80 participants and reached the top 3. I am encouraged to explore and experiment with AI tools and techniques, turning the learning experience into a vibrant, creative process. Though AI art and photography offer different creative experiences, they both contribute to my artistic growth in distinct and rewarding ways.

Here are some of my top AI images from different prompts using MidJourney. You might even recognize some of these from different pages on my website and made AI photos for all my pages, except for "Photography" where I used a photo I personally took.
